GAMESHEET
The Senators, who lead the American Hockey League (AHL) in power-play percentage, took advantage of their first man-advantage with Zack Smith netting the opening goal at 9:36 in the first period. Ryan Shannon and Ilya Zubov each earned assists on the marker. Only 1:51 later, Greg Mauldin gave Binghamton a 2-0 lead after a scrum in front of Aeros’ netminder Nolan Schaefer. The Aeros weren’t able to convert on any of their three power-play chances in the period and were out shot 11 to 5 as they trailed by two heading into the first intermission.
In his first game back with the Aeros, Krys Kolanos snapped the club’s scoreless streak that lasted over four periods of play with a man-advantage marker three minutes into the second period. Corey Locke and Morten Madsen each assisted on the goal that brought Houston within one. Houston out-shot Binghamton 13-7 in the middle frame to tie the overall shots at 18 apiece through 40 minutes of play.
Just 2:44 after the final intermission Locke netted an even-strength goal to tie the contest at 2-2. Benoit Pouliot and Clayton Stoner each earned assists after Pouliot threaded the needle through defenders with his pass to Locke. Houston kept the pressure on Martin Gerber with 11 total shots in the period including the game winner from Brandon Rogers at 14:56 in the final period. Rogers received a pass near center ice from Pouliot and after just crossing the blue line he slapped the shot on net past two defenders. The shot hit Gerber in the shoulder, bounced over and slowly trickled past the goal line as the goaltender sprawled backwards attempting for the save. Rogers’ goal was his first game winner and first since December 19.
The Aeros hit the road tonight en route to Chicago to face the Wolves in a 7 p.m. at Allstate Arena. Houston is on a five-game winning streak against the Wolves dating back to last season so tune in to Joe O’Donnell on 1070-AM KNTH as the Aeros attempt to extend that streak to six straight games!
Notes:
- Aeros’ LW Jason Ryznar is the only player remaining on the roster to have played in every game (49). RW Danny Irmen was the only other player on the roster to have played in every game, however he did not play tonight due to injury.
- Brandon Rogers netted his second goal of the season and first game-winner late in the third period. His first goal of the season was also in the third period on December 19 when Houston won 4-3 in a shootout after scoring all-three regulation goals in the third.
- Benoit Pouliot tallied two assists in the game for his first two-point game with the Aeros this season.
- Corey Locke recorded a goal and an assist in the game for his 14th multiple point game of the season. Houston is now 9-0-0-2 when he records two points and 11-1-0-2 when he tallies multiple points.

HOUSTON EARNS 2-1 VICTORY OVER LAKE ERIE WITH LATE GOAL
HOUSTON, Texas – Jason Ryznar tallied his second goal of the season for the Aeros with just under three minutes remaining to give Houston the 2-1 victory over the Lake Erie Monsters. Houston (20-17-1-7) now owns a 6-1 all-time record over the Monsters. The win moved the Aeros into second place in the West Division with four teams still within two points of Houston.
Houston opened the scoring at the 12:02 mark of the first period and hadn’t allowed a Monsters’ shot. Jesse Schultz took a centering feed from Corey Locke and one-timed it into the net for Schultz’s 11th goal of the season. The points for Locke and Schultz each extended their respective scoring streaks to three games. Lake Erie finally registered a shot at the 13:30 mark of the period and finished with two shots in the opening frame. Houston held the 1-0 lead after one period and the two shots allowed tied a season low for the Aeros.
Neither team was able to score in the second period. Houston finished 0-for-2 on the power play while also being whistled for two penalties. The Aeros only allowed four shots in the second period for a two-period total of six, the fewest shots allowed through two periods this season. Lake Erie’s four shots were recorded in the final four minutes of the period as the team didn’t record a shot for the first 16:10 of the period.
Lake Erie tied the game at the 4:35 mark in the third period on a power-play goal by Justin Bowers. He scored his first goal of the season on assists from Derek Peltier and Darcy Campbell. Ryznar tallied his second goal of the season for the 2-1 go-ahead marker for the Aeros with 2:59 remaining on the clock. He stuffed the puck in the net when the Aeros had an extra attacker for a delayed penalty. Tomas Mojzis and Brandon Rogers set the play up with a cross-ice pass just in front of the crease. Houston’s wasn’t safe just yet when the Monsters nearly tied things up with 10 seconds left on the clock when they had an extra attacker of their own. Schaefer knocked the puck away and held the puck to finish with the 2-1 victory.
Notes:
- Jesse Schultz and Corey Locke each extended their respective points streaks on the Aeros first period goal. Schultz’s streak is now at three games with two goals and three assists. Locke’s streak is now at three games with a goal and two assists. Brandon Rogers also extended his assist streak to three games with three assist when he helped on the game winner.
- Houston allowed two shots and four shots in the first two periods respectively. The six shots through two periods were the fewest total allowed this season and the two shots in the first tied the season low for shots in a period. The previous low through two periods was 11 on December 21 against the Peoria Rivermen.
- Goaltender Nolans Schaefer has started and won the last three games for the Aeros allowing only four goals in the three games. The streak ties a season high for goalie winning streaks. He has stopped 71 of 75 shots in the three games plus all three shootout-attempts against in Friday’s win.
- The three straights wins is the first time this season the club has recorded such a streak since they opened the season with four straight victories.
- Lake Erie has outscored the Aeros 7-1 in the third period this season including the Monsters’ five-goal third period on December 30 for a 6-2 victory, the team’s only win over Houston.
