HOUSTON AEROS TAKE 4-3 VICTORY OVER PEORIA RIVERMEN AFTER EIGHT ROUNDS OF A SHOOTOUT

mar22_img_7498HOUSTON, Texas – The Houston Aeros extended their lead for second place in the West Division with a 4-3 shootout win over the Peoria Rivermen Sunday night. Houston (35-25-1-8) will hit the road for a Wednesday tilt in Milwaukee Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m.

Corey Locke led the way with two regulation goals and netted a pair during the shootout. Aeros’ netminder Nolan Schaefer (25-16-5) stopped 19 of 22 shots during regulation and blocked four of eight during the shootout, improving his shootout record to 5-5 this season. Peoria goaltender Manny Legace blocked 25 of 28 before the shootout where he stopped three of eight.

GAMESHEET

Only one penalty was called in the opening period when the Aeros Clayton Stoner dropped the gloves with Ryan Reaves at 1:11 into the contest. Houston’s Benoit Pouliot had a wide open breakaway chance early in the first period but was kept out of the net when Legace made a big save to prevent an early deficit. Houston did eventually take the lead after Marco Rosa provided a breakout pass to Matt Beaudoin who took the initial shot on net from the left wing faceoff circle. Legace made the save but gave up a rebound to Locke who potted the puck in the wide open net. The goal, at 13:56 in the first period, extended Locke’s career-high point streak to nine games in which he has recorded ten points (3 goals, 7 assists).

Just two minutes into the second period Houston earned their first power play of the game which they took advantage of at the 3:12 mark. Pouliot took the puck into the right wing faceoff circle and sent it back to Brandon Rogers near the blue line. Rogers hard shot on net was tipped just in front of the crease by Rosa to give the Aeros a 2-0 lead.

Peoria brought the game within one when the Rivermen scored on their first power-play chance of the night. Justin Fletcher slapped the puck hard into the offensive zone and banked off the glass to directly in front of the net. Yan Stastny finished the play by snapping the puck past Schaefer.

The Aeros regained their two goal lead during a five-on-three power-play late in the period. Krys Kolanos sent the puck to Jesse Schultz to the right-hand side of Legace and quickly sent it cross-ice to Locke who flipped the puck into the net with 2:31 remaining in the second frame for his second marker of the contest. The second period was littered with penalties totaling 34 minutes between the two clubs including 14 penalty minutes assessed during a scuffle following the Aeros goal.

Legace kept it a one-goal game when he made a diving glove save while facing a two-on-one breakaway. Trent Whitfield brought the game back within one goal for Peoria as he netted an even strength goal at 10:43 in the third period after recovering a rebound off Schaefer. Stastny tied the contest at three apiece with 4:23 left in the contest during a power play for the Rivermen, forcing the eventual overtime and shootout.

Eight rounds of the shootout were required to decide the contest with Houston recording five successful attempts to Peoria’s four. Locke kept Houston alive in the seventh round when he came straight down the middle but peeled off wide left, allowing Legace to sprawl out before sending the puck top shelf at a hard angle. After Schaefer made a glove save to start the eighth round Kolanos netted the puck with a hard shot that snuck past Legace’s leg pads for the 4-3 win, Kolanos’ second shootout-winning goal of the season.

AEROS DEFEAT PEORIA 2-1 ON JERSEY’S OFF THEIR BACKS NIGHT

mar21_img_5499HOUSTON, Texas – The Houston Aeros auctioned their “Jerseys Off Their Backs” in support of Houston Aeros Charities after they defeated the Peoria Rivermen 2-1 at Toyota Center Saturday night in front of 5,974 fans. Houston (34-25-1-8) scored two unanswered goals for the win to move the team back into sole possession of second place in the West Division. The teams meet up again tomorrow at 4:05 p.m. as the Aeros and Rivermen continue to battle for playoff positioning.

GAMESHEET

Peoria got the scoring started only 3:55 into the first period when Steve Regier stole the puck and centered it from behind Houston’s net. Cam Paddock picked up the disc and slapped it between Nolan Schaefer’s legs and a 1-0 lead and only goal of the night. Schaefer finished the evening with 19 saves on 20 shots. Only one penalty was called in the period which went against the Rivermen but Houston wasn’t able to convert on the ensuing power play. The Aeros out shot Peoria 12-5 in the period but had a one goal deficit heading into the intermission.

Houston tied the contest at one apiece at 4:17 in the second frame when Matt Beaudoin netted his 10th goal of the season. Corey Locke sent the puck across the crease at an angle from behind the goal line and Beaudoin slapped the puck through traffic into the back of the net. Clayton Stoner earned the second assist on the even-strength goal. Shots were even in the second period at eight shots each, with the Aeros’ lone goal tying the contest before heading to the final 20 minutes of play.

The score remained tied until 9:31 in the final period when Jason Ryznar stuffed the puck into the net after a scrum in front of the Rivermen crease. John Lammers and Matt Kassian each assisted on the marker. A late penalty against the Aeros put Peoria on a power play for the remaining 1:07 of the contest. The Rivermen pulled Legace in favor of an extra attacker giving the club a 6-on-4 advantage but the added pressure wasn’t enough to tie the contest and force overtime.

Locke’s assist on Beaudoin’s second period goal extended his point streak to eight games and is the longest streak of his career. Since the streak started on March 1st in Milwaukee, Locke has recorded nine points (2 goals, 7 assists) including a two-point outing this past Sunday.

AEROS COMEBACK FOR 5-4 WIN OVER ROCKFORD

mar15_img_1937

HOUSTON, Texas – Krys Kolanos scored two goals as the Houston Aeros overcame two two-goal deficits to beat the Rockford IceHogs 5-4 Sunday night at Toyota Center. Benoit Pouliot and Corey Locke each added a goal and an assist for Houston (33-25-1-8) who took over sole possession of second place in the tightly packed West Division. Rockford (33-28-0-6) had two-goal leads twice in the game but gave up three unanswered goals to Houston and now find themselves in a tie for fourth place in the division. The Aeros will return home on Saturday, March 21 and Sunday, March 22 for a pair of games against the Peoria Rivermen. Call (713) 974-PUCK for tickets or visit AEROS.com.

It didn’t take the home team long to get on the board first. Matt Beaudoin tipped in a shot by Clayton Stoner on the Aeros first possession in the offensive zone just 29 seconds into the first period. Beaudoin’s ninth of the season marked the fastest goal scored by the Aeros to start a game this season.

Rockford responded by scoring the next two goals in the opening frame. First, it was Mike Radja when he banged home a rebound off a Dan Bertram shot. Then Pete MacArthur gave the IceHogs a 2-1 lead at the 17:44 mark when his shot from below the goal line bounced off the back of Nolan Schaefer’s left leg and into the net. Schaefer was pulled from the game in favor of Anton Khudobin who stopped the IceHogs’ final five shots of the period, most of them on a four-on-three power play.

Rockford opened up the second-period scoring just 18 seconds into the period when Evan Brophey scored his 14th of the season on assists from Tim Brent and Danny Groulx. The score remained 3-1 in favor of Rockford until Pouliot blasted his fifth goal of the season from the top of the left circle at the 10:26 mark. That goal ignited a four-goal period for Houston.

Rockford took a 4-2 lead on MacArthur’s second goal of the game, but Houston quickly answered with three unanswered goals. Locke tallied his 22nd of the season on the power play at the 16:02 mark, then Kolanos scored the next two goals for Houston. He scored at the 17:41 mark when he lifted a wrist shot over the shoulder of Corey Crawford on a pass from Danny Irmen.

Kolanos scored the game-winning goal with seven seconds to go in the second period. The Aeros came in on a line rush and Jesse Schultz patiently waited to feed Kolanos streaking in on the left wing. Kolanos ripped a one-timer passed Crawford for his second goal of the game and sixth multi-goal game of the season.

Khudobin and the Aeros shutdown the IceHogs in the third period and only allowed eight shots and no goals. Khudobin finished with 18 saves on 20 shots and earned his first AHL win of the season. The Aeros finished 1-3 on the power play and killed all four of Rockford’s penalties and took over sole possession of second place in the West Division with the win.
